What this site covers
Town & Harvest publishes guides on growing vegetables in constrained urban spaces. The focus is on conditions specific to Polish cities: a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers, apartment balconies with structural weight limits, and the soil volume constraints that container growing imposes.
The three current guides cover balcony growing basics, container tomato cultivation, and composting methods suitable for flats and small spaces. Additional guides are added periodically.
Who the content is for
The guides are written for residents of Polish cities — Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk, and others — who have limited outdoor space and want to produce some of their own vegetables. No prior growing experience is assumed.
Experienced gardeners may find some sections cover ground they already know. The seasonal timing information, variety recommendations, and local references are intended to be useful even for those with previous experience in different climates.
How content is developed
Guides are written based on publicly available horticultural sources, including research publications and extension materials from Polish agricultural universities. Where specific claims about techniques or quantities are made, they reflect information from verifiable sources.
The site does not make statistical claims or cite research without being able to point to a publicly accessible source. Where exact figures are uncertain, neutral phrasing is used rather than invented data.
Limitations and disclaimer
Growing results vary significantly depending on balcony orientation, microclimate, local weather in a given year, specific variety performance, and individual technique. The guides describe general principles and approaches — they cannot account for every variable in your specific situation.
Before adding heavy containers to a balcony, particularly an older building, consult your building administrator or a structural engineer. The guides reference weight limits as general figures; your building's specifications may differ.
